Absolutely right.

Up to 3 positions can show at top, if there are enough advertisers and they have strong click through rates and high bid prices. These are known as T1, T2, T3 in Google Analytics.

The others at right hand side are the normal positions occupied by any AdWords advertiser, maximum 8 per page (not "orphans"!)

If you are one of these, and want to appear at the top, simply keep raising your bid price and see what happens. With enough competitor advertisers, you should get there.

there seems to be 2 locations for sponsored links, 1) at the top of the other links and 2) in a column to the right. I frequently see sponsored links in both locations. How do you get your sponsored link to be in the stacked up colomn with the other organiz searches? It seems as tho sponsored links stacked in the right column are orphan step children to the others

Thanks
